What is Confirmation of Payee?

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that matches the bank account details entered by a payer with the account details held by the recipient's bank and displays a match outcome to the payer.

It's a new layer of protection for Australian consumers and businesses when they're making a payment to a BSB and account number.

Confirmation of Payee is an initiative of Australian Payments Plus, the same organisation that also provides trusted payment services like BPAY, Osko, eftpos, PayID and PayTo.

How does it work?

When you're sending money using a BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee will check the account details you've entered with the account details held by the recipient's bank and let you know the match outcome.

You'll be shown if it's a match, a close match, a no match or if there is an error.

That important information can help you decide whether you need to go back and check your details again, or if you feel comfortable to proceed with the payment. If something doesn't seem right, you can choose to cancel the payment.

Match outcomes

There are four possible match outcomes. Each result gives you a chance to make an informed decision about what action to take next.

MatchMatch

The account details you entered match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient's name will be displayed.

Close MatchClose Match

The account details you entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient's name will be displayed.

No MatchNo Match

The account details you entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient. The recipient's name will not be displayed unless it is a business or government organisation.

ErrorError

The service could not confirm the account details you entered match. Check the account with the intended recipient.

If you are receiving money into a personal account, the person who's paying you will be shown the account name only if the name they have entered is a match or a close match.
If any of these details are incorrect, the name will not be shown to protect your privacy.
If you're a business or government organisation account that's receiving a payment, the name of your account will be shown to the payer, regardless of whether it's a match or not.
Confirmation of Payee will check account details for all or future dated set first-time payments or future dated first-time payments set up to a BSB and account number and when you make amendments to your online banking address book. Additional checks may be made depending on the financial institution.

Yes. Confirmation of Payee will never stop you from completing a payment.
You are responsible for ensuring that payments are made to the correct account to reduce the risk of a scam or mistaken payment. You will be liable for losses arising from a mistaken payment or misdirected payment you or your signatory makes to a third party, and it is not possible for us to recover those funds from the unintended recipient.
The Confirmation of Payee service is managed by Bank First.
Confirmation of Payee will never contact you directly about Confirmation of Payee. That means any message from Confirmation of Payee asking you to send money or receive money is a scam.
If you believe you are being scammed, please contact Bank First and report it to the police.
To receive payments, share the following information with a payer:
Account name: Your account name is typically your legal first and last name as shown on your driver's licence, birth certificate or passport. For joint accounts, provide the legal first and last name of at least one of the account holders. The use of initials, nicknames, and shortened or abbreviated names will result in a No Match.
BSB: Make sure you check the BSB details are correct as the BSB differs from bank to bank. Our BSB is 704-191.
Account number: Your account number is the 9-digit number that is located next to the BSB on Internet Banking or the Bank First App. Your account number is not your Member number.
To receive payments to your business account, share the following information with a payer.
Account name: For business customers, the account name is normally the name of your business that you have registered with Bank First. Here is a guide on what to provide as your account name for specific accounts:
- Sole trader account: the registered sole trader name that you have provided Bank First.
- Company account: the name of your business that you have provided Bank First.
- Trust account: the name that appears on the Trust Deed that you have provided Bank First.
- Self-managed super fund account: The name of the self-managed super fund that you provided Bank First.
BSB: Make sure you check the BSB details are correct as the BSB differs from bank to bank. Our BSB is 704-191.
Account number: Your account number is the 9-digit number that is located next to the BSB on Internet Banking or the Bank First App. Your account number is not your Member number.
Names with special characters, like apostrophes ('), will still match without being entered. For example, enter "O'Brien" as "O Brien" or "Obrien". Or an account name with an ampersand (&) such as Paper & Pen can be entered as Paper Pen.

If you enter the wrong account details, you can end up sending your money to the wrong recipient. This can be difficult and time-consuming to resolve, which is why it’s important to check the accuracy of the details you enter before you send your money.
Eligible customers may request to be opted-out of the Confirmation of Payee service. This means your account name and match outcome will not be displayed to payers and could impact the likelihood of the payer proceeding with the payment.
