But owning a pet doesn’t come without its own responsibilities.
Adopting a pet is a commitment that has its own costs. When you adopt a pet, you’re committing to their wellbeing and that includes factoring in the costs associated with looking after your furbaby.
We asked a few pet parents to share what their furbaby costs them and the answers showed just how much things can vary! The cost of caring for a cat isn’t the same as a dog, and even within each, every pet’s needs are different.

Do your research before adopting a pet
Some pets cost more than others so make sure you do your research before adopting. A playful pup might chew through toys and shoes faster than you can replace them, while others are straight A students with little to no extra maintenance. It’s all part of the joy of owning a pet. No two pets are the same! Look into how much food, toilet, grooming, toys etc. can cost before committing.
Be prepared for unexpected costs
Even the most careful parents face surprises. Vet bills from illness or injury can quickly add up, and without pet insurance, they can be a real shock. Then there are smaller costs like replacing a chewed-up lead or torn-up bed. Planning ahead for these expenses can help you enjoy pet ownership, reducing financial stress.
Because at the end of the day, while pets do come with costs, the love and companionship they give back is priceless.
