Financial Wellbeing Survey
Nurses are looking after others, but who’s looking after their financial wellbeing?
At Bank First, we wanted to understand the real-life money pressures faced by nurses and healthcare professionals. So we asked them.
More than 120 healthcare professionals from across Australia, mostly nurses - shared their experiences, challenges and priorities in a recent financial wellbeing survey.
The results were clear. Nurses are doing their best to plan for the future, but too often feel left behind by banks that don’t understand the realities of shift work, rising living costs and time constraints.
“It feels like owning a home... is getting further away”
47% of survey respondents are saving for a goal
Of that, 60% are saving to buy their first home.
53% say they’re not confident they’ll reach that goal
They cited rising costs, economic uncertainty and a lack of financial knowledge as key barriers.
“It’s not just about the modest salary... it’s the load”
48% of survey respondents are paying off debt
Of that, 84% are managing a mortgage.
They are concerned about the 'unknowns'
Such as unexpected life events, interest rates and the economy.
“I’m not confident with finance stuff... and would love some support"
70% rated their financial literacy as average or below
68% would like access to affordable financial coaching
“Most days... I don’t even take my lunch break”
89% struggle to prioritise personal or professional growth
They told us they’re hungry for knowledge, especially around budgeting, home ownership, wealth-building and retirement.
Nearly 9 in 10 say they want to pursue further study
But most can’t find the time or clarity to start.
What nurses want from their bank
Support that fits their lifestyle
Nurses want their bank to work the way they do... with flexibility, personal connection and support that fits around shift work and real life. They value human connection, convenience, and empathy.
Tools and guidance that reduce stress
And don't add to it. They’re looking for simple, clear ways to manage money with confidence. Support that educates, empowers and builds momentum, not more complexity.
Communication that cuts through
Nurses are busy. The best ways to reach them are direct, clear and meet them where they’re at... like their inbox or workplace.
What makes a nurse feel genuinely supported?
When asked what would prove a bank truly cares...
We’re listening, and acting
These insights are shaping how Bank First shows up for nurses. We’re designing real support, better tools and a genuine commitment to their financial wellbeing.
